Why is a great smile important?

Look at these statistics...

A recent national study has found that teeth are the number one facial feature that people would change. Three out of four adults think that a nice smile is important to landing their dream job. 84% think that an attractive smile is important for meeting Mr or Ms Right. While 94% of those polled also said they are likely to notice a person's smile when they meet them for the first time, so having a nice smile is of real importance.

In the study, two sets of photos were created, with each set showing four individuals before undergoing cosmetic dentistry and four after treatment. Half the respondents viewed set A, the other half set B. The eight subjects viewed by respondents were evenly divided by gender. Two had mild improvements through cosmetic dentistry, two had moderate improvements and four had major improvements to their smiles, to give a wide range for respondents to view. None, however, had visibly rotten teeth, missing teeth or catastrophically bad dental health in the before shots. Respondents were not told that they were looking at dentistry, but were asked to make snap judgments rating each person for the ten characteristics, on a scale of one to ten, with “one” being “not at all,” and “ten” being “extremely.”

The results indicated that an attractive smile does have broad ranging benefits:

characteristic average “before” rating average “after” rating increase
attractive 4.6 5.9 1.3
Intelligent 5.9 6.5 0.6
Happy 6.2 6.8 0.6
successful in their career 5.8 6.7 0.9
Friendly 6.3 6.8 0.5
Interesting 5.4 6.1 0.7
Kind 6.0 6.4 0.4
Wealthy 4.9 5.9 1.0
popular with the opposite sex 5.0 6.2 1.2
sensitive to other people 5.6 6.1 0.5

How Important is an Attractive Smile?

“Based on a lot of interaction with happy patients, we were expecting this type of difference in attractiveness and popularity with the opposite sex”.

“To have large gains in how successful, intelligent, interesting and wealthy patients appeared after cosmetic dentistry caught even us by surprise. We’ve been telling people that a beautiful smile was a great investment in their futures. Now we have independent evidence.”

When can veneers help?

Crooked or twisted teeth can often look unsightly and are difficult to clean. This problem can be solved quite easily by having veneers made. Veneers are hand crafted ultra - thin individual coverings made by a skilled technician, the material used is a special dental ceramic. This ceramic is made from the basic constituents of granite (feldspar and quartz), but is highly translucent and tooth like, this means the veneers look totally natural yet have the highest strength possible. Once bonded to the tooth, the veneer become even stronger and is natural looking and long lasting.

This will give the benefit of making your teeth straight and easier to clean, as well as improving the overall appearance.

Make sure your dentist is up to date

Your dentist needs to be up to date with all the latest techniques and materials. Cosmetic dentistry is moving at a fast pace and you do not want to be stuck with someone that uses outdated techniques or materials. There are two main organisations that will keep your dentist up to date:

  • British Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry
  • American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry

You should check with your dentist before they start work on you for veneers to make sure they are members of these organisations. Of course there is no compulsion for them to join, but if they are members it shows you they are really serious about keeping up to date with the science of providing beautiful smiles with veneers.

What to look out for when choosing a cosmetic dentist

artistic excellence
Smile designs require an unique ability to transform problem teeth into a flawless smile. You should not need to ask to see the dentist’s previous work; they will be proud of what they have created and be willing to share it with you. They should have portfolios available at the practice and a smile gallery section on their web site. You want to see smiles that look natural and healthy. No one wants a fake smile.

training
Continual professional development is a must for any dentist carrying out cosmetic dentistry. Don’t be afraid to ask about recent courses the dentist has been on and particularly courses on the procedures you are interested in. Also make sure your dentist has attended hands - on courses, so they have practised beforehand what they intend to carry out on you.

technology
Dentists who are using the latest high tech equipment and materials are also more likely to be up to date on most recent treatments. Expect to have a quick tour of the practice – you will get a feel for the cleanliness and organisation of the clinical areas.

Expect the dentist to have digital x-rays (90% less radiation), digital cameras specially designed to take good quality pictures of your teeth, a central sterilisation area and all the relevant information on their premises.

Porcelain Veneers Herts

"When I visited your practice to restore my smile, I was treated professionally and politely at all times and was put at ease when I was nervous. The best compliment I have had was seeing my sister recently and her response was “incredible, you look like a new person”. You should never under estimate the importance of caring for your teeth, and especially having confidence in your dentist. I would like to take this opportunity to thank you and your work colleagues, I will happily recommend your work to friends and family whenever I have the opportunity."
Deborah Gunn

How much would veneers cost me?

This is an excellent question and you are completely right to be concerned about how much this treatment costs. Let me put it to you this way, how much would you have to pay for ALL your beauty treatments for 10 years? Let's do a quick calculation on the averages people spend:

  • Hairdresser = £50 every 6 weeks = £450 per year
  • Nails - manicures, care and varnishes, Face creams & Makeup = £200 per month = £2400 per year
  • TOTAL cost = £2850 per year

So over a 10 year period you will typically spend around £28,500 on beauty treatments. Now, how much do you think dental veneers would cost over the same period? £20,000? £15,000? What about £10,000?.. in fact, for around half this amount, that's £5,530 you could have a brand new smile with 10 dental veneers.

This can be a reality for you, simply call us on 01707 261367 to book your free initial consultation because we are here to listen.
